Maatsuyker Island
Maatsuyker Island is located around 10km off the South Coast of Lutruwita/Tasmania. It was a summer hunting ground of the Needwondee people who would access it by bark canoe. Today it forms part of the Southwest National Park and Tasmanian World Heritage Area. The island is renowned for it’s wild weather due to it’s position in the Southern Ocean. Westerly winds well in excess of 100km/h and 6-7m seas stirred up by the Roaring Forties are common place.
Hundreds of thousands of breeding sea birds call the island home in the summer months and many more species of birds and seals inhabit the island year round. The island has had a constant human presence since 1891 when Australia’s southern most lighthouse was constructed on the SW corner of the island.
